Item Number: m25 Location: McDermitt, Nevada Condition: Super Polished Slabs of McDermitt Sagenite are rare, This Polished agate is a fine example. Size: 7.5" X 6" X .2" Weight: Approximately 1/2 lb
Description: This beautifully Polished Slab of McDermitt Sagenite is from a caldera complex near McDermitt, Nevada. Unlike Plume Agate, Moss Agate and Dendritic Agate, Sagenite is an agate replacement or pseudomorph after other minerals and retains the form of the original minerals crystals. This Agate Slice of Sagenite is a fine collectors piece or would make an extraordinary decorator item. As a note of interest the volcanic hot spot we now know as Yellowstone National Park was located under the McDermitt area roughly 16 million years ago. The Continental Plate has moved over the hot spot over this period and thus the hot spot is now located in NW Wyoming. Over 100 calderas have formed over that time, many being buried under the basaltic flows of the Snake River Plains in S Idaho.
