Unlike Plume Agate, Moss Agate and Dendritic Agate, Sagenite is an agate replacement or pseudomorph after other minerals and retains the form of the original mineral crystals.

As a note of geologic interest the deep seated volcanic hot spot under the caldera basin which covers much of Yellowstone National Park was located under the McDermitt area roughly 16 million years ago and was the source of the McDermitt Caldera complex. The Continental Plate has moved across this relatively stationary hot spot over the intervening period bring it to its current position under the continent. Over 100 caldera eruptions have taken place over that 16 million year time period. Most of those calderas are now buried under the deep basaltic flows of the Snake River Plains in southern Idaho.
